7 New Car Run-In Maintenance Tips

How you treat your new car’s engine directly impacts its long term performance, efficiency & life-span. Neglecting a proper car for vehicle’s engine will have serious impacts on the vehicle’s road performance.

1) Ideal Run-In Period

The run in period varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. It is advisable to keep your revs. low to let the engine run smoothly. For petroleum autos, the ideal RPM rev should be b/w the range of 2500 until the first service which will take place at at 1000 kms.

For a diesel motor, confine & restrict it to the RPMs of around 2000- 2,500 for the initial 1,500 km. After that point onwards, you can increase the limit starting b/w the range of 2,500 – 2,800 RPMs upto 1,500 km. Beyond that point, you can do bit by bit increment in it to the most extreme by 2,500 km.

2. Drive Gently

The idea of a run-in is to make sure you don’t put unnecessary strain on the engine. Keep your revs low for the engine to run smoothly. For petrol cars, the ideal RPM rev range is to be within 2500 until the first service that will happen at 1000 kms. You can then start to gradually increase the revs up to 3000 – 3500 RPM during the run in period.

For those owning a diesel, the RPM range should be anywhere between 2000 – 2500 until 1500 kms for best performance. You can then gradually increase the rev up to 3000 RPM until the run in period is complete. In most diesels, the torque kicks in at 2000 RPM, so there shouldn’t be much loss of power there.

Be gentle on the throttle, avoid revving up unnecessarily, you will be wasting fuel and engine life that way. It is always recommended that you start the engine and allow it warm up before starting your journey.

3) Drive In Different Conditions

Evade delayed task at consistent speed. Moving parts will settle down better on the off chance if you upgrade your speed. The idea of a run-in is to expose your car’s engine to  a wide RPM range. Maintain a strategic distance from long outings and from extreme busy roads. Aways change the gears at the recommended shift speed given in your manual. Try not to drive at a slow speed with the transmission in a high gear.

4) Do Not Exceed the Speed 100km/hr

Suggested & recommended by every manufacturer, abstain from touching the 100km/hr mark for the initial hundred kilometers otherwise, you’ll end up in revving up your engine and switching to higher gears, which will also makes you to apply sudden brakes, shortening the  brakes & clutch life. It is suggested that you should avoid hard braking for at-least upto 300 kms. Start slowly and gradually increase your speed.

5) Synthetic Oil Is A Big No

Regardless of your aims & intentions to use the synthetic oil for your car or not in the long haul, don’t use the synthetic oil during the run-in period of the car. Manufactured oil has a higher greasing & lubricating properties that will only slow-down the run- in-process for you. It is best that you keep using the regular mineral oil or the manufacturer prescribed grade oil. You can swtich to synthetic oil only after the second service at about 5000 kms.

6. First Service At 1000 Kms

You have to get your car overhauled on the completion of the 1000 kms. This will be a free service in which the service station will change the oil, coolant & engine additive but look for other performance issues if any, then get them fixed.

7) Apply Wax On The Car

It was earlier recommended not to paint your car to give the new paint a chance to settle in, but nowadays, modern cars are painted via robotized robot hands and will settle in before it leaves the manufacturing plant. Apply a good quote of wax to protect the paint of your car from water, dust, oil, rain-drops, etc.


Long thruway excursions or time spent in packed in rush hour gridlock is terrible for the run-in process. The key to run-in period is to subject the engine to a wide range of RPMs, so you will most likely need to modify your driving style and try driving under different conditions.

  • Many new cars are manufactured & designed in such a way to limit the harm from a poor day-day running, but still these engines can get an advantage from the benefits of an appropriate run-in maintenance & servicing.

    I bought Nexon XMA yesterday. I have been told to keep RPM within 1500 which makes the driving very dull while your post suggests range of 2500. I see gear changes happening at around 2100 and I get little concerned. Another thing is the driving mode as it decides when the gear will shift.
